Annual Report

2. Business performance

In the 70th year of its existence, the German Press Agency found itself once again in a stable economic situation. It succeeded in setting the course for the future, launching new products and services in the marketplace and in further improving the quality and value of its reporting.

The new pricing model for daily newspaper publishers and private radio stations subscribing to dpa’s Basic Services deserves particular attention and the dpa supervisory board has given its approval. At the heart of the new model is the complete access to dpa content across all channels with full legal security guaranteed and usage suitable for print, digital, mobile, smart speaker and other formats. In accordance with the new pricing model, the Basic Service now comprises a total of seven elements: These are text, pictures, three regional services, InfoLine, three RegioLines, SportsLine and StarLine.

The basis of the new pricing model, which came into force from 2020, is a stronger emphasis on the digital, leading to so-called integrated reach. The focus is on a newly established index which classifies print reach three times higher than digital reach. This basically means greater simplification and clarity for dpa customers. Implementation is expected to take five years.

Beyond this, the establishment of the marketplace concept has also made further progress. For example, the dpa ID app was made available to users of the various dpa applications and Polit-X was the first external service to be won for the platform. The app ensures that dpa customers are kept informed about all the relevant information in the various applications, for example about important events, dates and news which conform to their chosen profile. Several thousand journalists and communicators already have their own dpa ID and they are filling the marketplace idea with life.

In 2019, the group succeeded in further expanding its business base. Several of the strategic distribution agreements reached underline the economic success of dpa. For example, dpa distributes videos of the TeleNewsNetwork (TNN) for web and digital use. In the Spanish and Latin American markets, cooperation with Europa Press was intensified. Last but not least, a mention should be given to enhanced business with international platforms, including fact-checking activities and comprehensive research work (Office Holder) in connection with the European elections.

In the editorial arena, the Slack-based information channel was able to go into operation after successful test runs. As an upstream alarm system, this product provides swift and transparent information on developing top stories. It allows dpa to meet specific customer requests for advance news alerts and detailed follow-up coverage. This boosts their reactions in breaking news situations.

With its Reporter app, dpa is offering a groundbreaking innovation that will benefit all those who use dpa services. dpa reporters anywhere in the world can now enter their reports directly via smartphone, thus enabling them to reach their customers even faster and more effectively.

The focus also remains on the continuous improvement of existing dpa services. Using process profiling analysis, dpa has successfully enhanced the quality of its services in recent years. The utility of its services has also benefitted greatly from the ongoing dialogue with customers. This is reflected in improved figures for the number of dpa items published by the print media. Since then, dpa has initiated a similar process for the photographic sector in order to further boost utilization in these departments.
